Toronto cops cleared after man shot dead in 2015

The province’s police watchdog has cleared two Toronto cops who shot and killed Kwasi Skene-Peters, 21 after a probe determined they acted in self-defence during an early morning firefight last summer. The investigation determined undercover Toronto Police Service officers identified Skene-Peters in a lineup in front of Tryst Nightclub at 2:00 AM on July 25 last year. “It was only after Mr. Skene-Peters opened fire on the two subject officers that they returned fire,” said SIU director Tony Loparco in a statement. Two weeks prior, a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for his arrest on two charges of first-degree murder after two men were found shot dead in a 22nd-floor condo unit near Queen St. and Dovercourt Rd. When Skene-Peters and another man returned to a vehicle in the parking lot roughly an hour later, officers moved in repeatedly yelling “Stop,” “Put your hands up,” “Police,” “You’re under arrest” and “Freeze – don’t move.”
