Toronto board urged to continue after-hours programs in needy schools despite funding cut

The Toronto public board should go ahead with after-school programming permits in the city’s neediest neighbourhoods despite the loss of almost $1 million in provincial grants, a report to trustees recommends. The money had been promised by the previous Liberal government, and boards have run many of these programs for years. “The grant subsidizes school boards to offer free permitting for use of schools in 77 schools that make up the priority list schools (low socio-economic),” the board report states. School boards had called the timing “bizarre” given it was already four months into the school year. Toronto Catholic board Chair Maria Rizzo said she was “truly blindsided” by the move.
