Wind flipped over cars at a Navy installation Friday morning as a tornado touched down in the Washington region for at least the eighth time in recent weeks. The National Weather Service confirmed Friday that a tornado with maximum winds of 90 mph caused damage at the Naval Support Facility in Dahlgren, Va., on the Potomac River in King George County, Va. During the intense, rain-laden storms that swept across the region Friday, two other tornadoes were reported in parts of Virginia more distant from Washington. An EF-1 tornado was reported in Dinwiddie County, the weather service said, and an EF-0 storm, in the weakest category, touched down in Bedford County, which is east of Roanoke. Confirmation of the tornado at Dahlgren on Friday brings to at least eight the number of such storms that touched down in the Washington region since early April.
