Tories failing to deal with unpaid internships, say campaigners

Campaigners have accused the government of failing to take action on unpaid internships after Conservative MPs filibustered a bill that aims to ban the practice. On Friday, the Tory MP Alec Shelbrooke secured a second reading of a private member’s bill that proposed banning unpaid internships. The debate came days after the employment minister, Damian Hinds, told ITV’s Peston on Sunday that the government was reviewing unpaid internships. Unfortunately, that seems to be impossible, but nobody can tell me why.”Lyons said businesses including EY and PricewaterhouseCoopers had stated their opposition to unpaid internships. “If the government is genuinely committed to social mobility, it should be listening to businesses and campaigners,” he said.
