Tories accused of being lax in engaging public on electoral reform as parties struggle for consensus

Maryam Monsef, the Liberal democratic institutions minister, conducted her own town halls this summer regarding electoral reform, while Tories were still gunning for a referendum on the issue, seeing events as ineffective and conducting their own public engagement differently. As the special parliamentary committee on electoral reform launches its own tour Monday there is little consensus on what the best path forward is, and on what “consensus” among parties would even mean. “In the vast majority of Conservative seats, nothing’s happening,” said the NDP’s Nathan Cullen, who held 10 town halls in B.C. He said a majority of people who attended his “packed” town halls wanted some kind of proportional system. He said he knows of at least four MPs who have held town halls.
