A digger lies on its side at a road works site on State Highway 79 between Geraldine and Fairlie. An excavator that rolled on its side at a road works site on the Geraldine-Fairlie Hwy (State Highway 79) on Wednesday caused delays to traffic. John Keenan, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency maintenance contract manager for South Canterbury, said the highway between the intersections of Mulvihill and Hall was closed until 4pm. He said the excavator was being used on a rehabilitation site when the incident occurred. “The contractor has launched an investigation to find out what went wrong and prevent a reoccurrence in the future.”
