When asked during a virtual Science and Technology Select Committee whether there is a risk of the virus being transmitted when schools reopen to more pupils, Mr Rahman said there is "always a risk of transmission". He also told MPs that he did not know exactly how many young people under 18 had died from Covid-19. Mr Rahman, who has attended 10 meetings of Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said: "The view is that there's no evidence to suggest that children transmit the virus any more than adults. Mr Rahman also told MPs that it was not the DfE's decision to reopen schools in England to three primary school year groups from June 1. His comments came after an alliance of education unions called on the Government to "step back" from its plan to reopen schools from next month.
