Top junior players show Canada’s tennis depth extends beyond Milos Raonic, Eugenie Bouchard

In the seven years since Wozniak’s breakthrough, Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic became the first Canadians to reach the finals of a Grand Slam event, Bouchard at Wimbledon in 2014 and Raonic this year. In Canada, where hockey players have adorned $5 bills, interest is mushrooming in the summer game of tennis, to match the increasing success of Canadian players at the top levels. “It’s my plan, just so you know,” said Kelly Murumets, the president and chief executive of Tennis Canada, who credits her predecessors with taking the initiative to build an elite tennis structure in Canada. A central tennis hub was established in Montreal, at the site of the Rogers Cup, to develop the country’s most promising young players. “I’m proud of that, and that’s a reflection of Canada,” said Murumets, the Tennis Canada president.
