Tongi factory boiler blast leaves 20 dead


At least 20 people have been killed and 50 more sustained burn injuries when a boiler of a garment packaging factory exploded in Tongi of Gazipur on Saturday morning, hospitals sources said. Seven of the deceased were identified as security guards Abdul Hannan and Jahangir Hossain, packaging operator Rafiqul Islam, Shift-in-Charge Shuvas Chandra, generator operator Anisur Rahman, floor operator Idris Ali and cleaner Shangkar Sarkar. Some 30 people have left Tongi hospital after taking primary treatment, he added. The fire erupted after a boiler of Tampaco Foils Ltd, a packaging factory, blasted at 6:15am in BISIC industrial area of Tongi, said Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman. The packaging factory is owned by Mokbul Hossain, a resident of Sylhet.
