Would you drive 40 kilometres during a scorching hot day to buy a $3 soft-serve ice cream cone? He didn’t hesitate one July weekday morning to drive from his Thornhill home to his favourite ice cream spot, Tom’s Dairy Freeze on The Queensway in Etobicoke. “This is the best ice cream in Toronto, and I don’t mind making the drive here for it,” he says outside the ice cream parlour holding his cone of vanilla-chocolate twist. The small parlour, which only offers take-out since they removed their usual benches when the pandemic struck, features 22 ice cream flavours and other treats such as banana splits, parfait, milkshakes, sundaes and ice cream sandwiches. It’s clear Di Piazza adores more than just the ice cream he’s twisting onto a cone.
