Sir Andy Murray will not defend his Olympic gold medal as the former world No 1 withdrew from his first round match hours before it was due to start. But in a dramatic turn of events Murray, who won gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016 in singles, withdrew and was replaced by Australia's Max Purcell. Sportsmail understands that Murray has been dealing with a tight quad muscle and had to choose between the singles or the doubles event. 'I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe.' Cerundolo responded by taking the second set in a tiebreak, much to the frustration of Broady as he wasted two match points up 5-4.
