So far in calendar year 2021, 11 of the 25 most watched primetime programs have been the Tokyo Olympics. If the Tokyo Olympics had been a regularly scheduled program in the 2020-21 season, it would have ranked second behind NFL Sunday Night Football. With the pandemic and some studios deciding to release movies in theaters and online simultaneously, that strategy changed for the Tokyo Olympics. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics the primetime median age was 39, in the 2016 Rio Olympics it had increased to 53. Looking at other digital media outlets NBC reported that during the Olympics, there were 2.9 billion impressions on NBC Olympics Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
