Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has asked deputy commissioners and law enforcement agencies to arrest unscrupulous businessmen who stockpile rice. “Every district administration and police have been ordered to arrest rice dealers who illegally hoard rice,” he told reporters on Tuesday after meeting leaders of Auto Mill Owners’ Association at the secretariat. Tofail blamed illegal hoarding for the hike in rice prices and warned businessmen of consequences if they stockpiled the staple illegally. Last week, police uncovered a huge amount of hoarded rice from the warehouse of Bangladesh Rice Mill Association chairman Abdur Rashid in Kushtia. His company was fined Tk50,000 for hoarding the rice.
