Today marks 50 days since The Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained in RussiaEvan was detained in Russia on 29th March and was accused of espionage by the Federal Security Bureau. This was the first time Russia had brought a spy case against an overseas reporter since the Cold War. After he was detained, The Wall Street Journal, his colleagues, and the Biden administration all denied Russia’s claim that he was spying and called for his immediate release. Before he was detained, Evan was the reporter responsible for covering Russia, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union.
