Today in Canada’s Political History: Lester Pearson accepts Nobel Peace Prize


On this date in 1957 Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Lester Pearson was in Norway, where he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts at resolving the Suez Crisis of the year before. All these decades later, Mr. Pearson remains the only Canadian to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. “Of all our dreams today there is none more important – or so hard to realize – than that of peace in the world,” Pearson told his immediate audience and the world. Lester B. Pearson: May I thank you, Mr. Chairman, for your very kind and generous words. I am sorry that I am not sufficiently educated to have understood them in Norwegian but I was able to detect two words, “Lester Pearson”.
