On this date in 1949 history was made at the B.C. Legislature with the naming of Nancy Hodges as Speaker. Her nomination made her the first-ever woman in the British Empire and Commonwealth to hold a Speakership. When she was defeated in 1953 provincially, Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent named her to the Senate. This remarkable advocate for women’s rights passed into history in 1969.
