Today in Canada’s Political History: Bible Bill Aberhart elected Premier of AlbertaHistory was made on this date in Alberta in 1935 with the election of the legendary William “Bible Bill” Aberhart and his Social Credit party colleagues to office. A radio evangelist, Aberhart and his Social Credit theories offered hope to many in Western Canadian as the Great Depression raged. He famously once even attempted to convert the visiting Queen Elizabeth to the Social Credit cause. He was succeeded by Ernest Manning and Social Credit would remain in office in Alberta until 1971.
