The last time the unemployment rate was as low as it was last month, in 2000, the economy was on the precipice of recession. But the fundamentals of today’s economy—marked by more moderate growth and lower inflation, wage growth and stock price gains—suggest this lengthy streak of job creation and economic output growth could persist without tipping into the recession seen in 2001.
