These are people who no longer require hospital care but cannot go home safely. With one in six hospital beds occupied by an ALC patient, there’s less room to treat people who truly require hospital care, or to accommodate a surge during flu season or a pandemic. Although we must ensure acute care beds keep up with need, ultimately the major solutions lie outside hospital walls. Record numbers waiting in hospital beds as a last resort are proof that the only way to achieve better care for everyone is to take better care of seniors.
