Digitisation — the mass adoption of connected digital services by consumers, enterprises, and governments — can be a key economic driver for growth and job-creation. But the point to note here is that technology start-ups need patents to protect their proprietary knowledge and suitably monetise them in line with their business interests. For start-ups to happen in environmental and social sectors there would be need for patient capital and impact investment. With patient capital, the investor is willing to make a financial investment in a business with no expectation of making a quick profit. Although patient capital can be considered a traditional investment instrument, it has gained new life with the rise in environmentally and socially responsible enterprises.
