However, as Max Hastings confirms (“It’s scary what we need to spend on defence”, Nov 23), they have singularly failed to provide both the personnel and equipment to achieve this. Our ability to defend our shores against a large-scale missile/drone attack is virtually nonexistent. So isn’t it time for our political leaders to rise above party politics and come together to urgently and collectively guarantee an increased defence budget, in time to meet the recommendations of the strategic defence review? And haven’t the service chiefs a duty to put their careers on the line, to the point of resignation, if our politicians fail to provide what they
