Sir, Alun Evans (letter, Jan 26) and Alex Massie (“The time for another vote is a long way off”, Scotland edition, Jan 26) both miss a key factor behind support for independence. Many Scots are deeply frustrated by the economic, cultural and social costs of the hard Brexit negotiated by the UK government. Independence is the only approach that would allow Scotland to take its own steps back towards a closer relationship with Europe. Brexit also makes it much harder to argue for a new approach to referendums.
