Times letters: Covid-19’s impact on the young and the old

Sir, It is a pity for all the intensive studying undertaken by sixth-formers to come to nought (“Exams cancelled after virus forces schools to shut down”, Mar 19). It was mooted before the pandemic that the university year ought perhaps to begin in January, so that offers would be given on actual, rather than predicted, grades. Next year would be an ideal opportunity for this to be implemented. This year’s A-level exams, rather than being cancelled, could be deferred to November/December 2020 and the students then take up their university places in January, having achieved real grades. Ben KarpKingston upon ThamesSir, As a former headteacher I am annoyed that the government has decided to close schools.
