Times letters: Casual ignorance about Ireland and its history

Sir, As the only mainland MP since 1929 to have represented a Northern Ireland party (albeit through resigning the Conservative whip and joining the Democratic Unionist Party) and as a thoroughly anglicised Ulster-Scot, I read David Aaronovitch’s article (“A nearby country of which we know nothing”, comment, Jan 6) with sad agreement. He might also have observed that the casual ignorance among the English about Ireland has also been, and remains, fertile breeding ground for the view that Ulster is an awkward and ultimately disposable part of the United Kingdom: a view implicitly held by successive British governments and expressed powerfully in the Northern Ireland protocol.
