Sir, Why should revising the outcome of the 2016 referendum “undermine faith in the democratic principles this country abides by”, as Alister Jack and other Scottish Conservatives suggest (letter, Dec 28)? After all, it is considered fair game to begin opposing the winners of a general election immediately afterwards. The political party with the second-highest number of seats is called “Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition” and its leader is even paid by the state to do down the government. If parliament itself decides to ask people to think again, I fail to see how such another referendum “would undermine trust in parliament”.
