Sir, Theresa May insists that another plebiscite on Brexit would do “irreparable damage to the integrity of our politics” (“May urged to let MPs take control of Brexit”, Dec 17). Last year she was not similarly troubled when she urged the Commons to circumvent the Fixed-term Parliaments Act under which the parliament elected in 2015 was due to last until 2020. MPs supported her by 522 votes to 13; an outraged people did not take to the streets. The number of names added to and removed from electoral registers in the past 30 months far exceeds the 2016 referendum majority.
