Canada’s Competition Bureau chief Matthew Boswell is asking lawmakers for help modernizing the Competition Act. But Canada’s Competition Act is outdated, toothless and doesn’t have the capacity to deal with the challenges of the digital era. The role of the Competition Bureau is to investigate complaints and decide whether or not to file an application to the Competition Tribunal. Boswell’s attempts to put the modernization of the Competition Act on front pages and to introduce progressive values should be applauded. Based on ideas from the ’60s and written in the ’80s, Canada’s Competition Act hasn’t aged well.
