Can we say Kenya of 57 independent years and about 46 ethnic communities has a distinct worldview or national philosophy? Our policy documents and even general public communications are rendered in complex English language. Julius Nyerere of Tanzania made Kiswahili a national and peoples’ language that is literally spoken by all. But apart from news, entertainment, scanty educational and religious programmes, one hardly encounters content that can seriously shape the formation of a national worldview. Our deployment of our local languages, Kiswahili and English should lead us into a national discourse about shared identity, culture and values.
