François Melese’s comments about Asian-Americans apply equally to European-Americans, whose ancestors originated anywhere from Portugal to Russia or Greece to Norway (“‘Asian-American’ Is Too Broad to Be Useful,” Letters, Oct. 30). There are also stark cultural differences in culture, history, language, religion, etc., among the English, Irish, Scottish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Italian, Greek and Hungarian peoples, not to mention Catalans, Provençals and others seeking their own national identities.
