Timaru's food and beverage processors target waste


South Canterbury’s food and beverage processors will prioritise the reduction and reuse of biowastes, plastics and personal protective equipment following a second annual meeting to collectively address waste issues in the region. South Canterbury Food Processors and Manufacturers Business Connection Group launched the ‘Sustainable is Attainable’ campaign in May 2019 to better manage their by-products and waste by working in unity as a sector. READ MORE:* Timaru targets domestic tourists* South Canterbury businesses leading the way in sustainability, environmental issues* Major South Canterbury food sustainability initiative to be launchedThe food and beverage sector in South Canterbury produces vegetables, fish, dairy, meat and honey through its primary industries, while secondary producers make products including sauces, beer, vegetable juice, and pet food. “It is widely recognised that some key obstacles to getting value from waste streams are coordination problems and high transport costs. “To overcome these problems at a local level, there may be an opportunity for companies to work together to reduce waste or add value to their respective waste streams.”She said some opportunities for collaboration identified in this project involve similar waste streams, while others combined complementary waste streams.
