Timaru woman Cushla Hodge, seen with cat Ellie, is hoping the trial treatment CAR-T-cell will get rid of her diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy clinical trials through the Malaghan Institute in Wellington started in September 2019 to redirect patients’ immune systems. Ross Giblin/Stuff Malaghan Institute clinical director Dr Robert Weinkove and Evelyn Hyde are part of the team working on CAR T-cells trials. CAR T-cells are an emerging treatment for relapsed and refractory lymphomas, leukaemias and myeloma. The ENABLE trial of which Weinkove is principal is assessing a new type of CAR T-cell, manufactured locally at the Malaghan Institute, according to Leukemia and Blood NZ.
