PhotoPHILADELPHIA — Tim Kaine forcefully criticized Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee, on Thursday after Mr. Johnson equated the targeting of noncombatants by the Syrian government with the accidental bombing of civilians by United States-backed forces. He went on to lump Mr. Johnson in with Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, whom Mr. Kaine and Hillary Clinton, his running mate, have repeatedly declared to be unfit to be commander in chief. “Two of the three candidates clearly don’t have an understanding for the role of our military and the role that a commander in chief needs to play in supporting our military,” Mr. Kaine said. “Well no, of course not — we’re so much better than all that,” Mr. Johnson said sarcastically when asked if he sees a moral equivalence. But he said Mr. Johnson’s comments demonstrated “a profound misunderstanding of global affairs.”“Now this is the same guy who didn’t know what Aleppo was,” Mr. Kaine said, “so, you know, he’s already demonstrated he doesn’t understand the situation in Syria.”
