Pitchers and catchers don’t report for Spring Training until Wednesday for the Detroit Tigers, but Al Avila is already looking ahead. For Avila, that’s part of the challenge of being the club’s vice-president of baseball operations and general manager. “A lot goes on in Lakeland before Spring Training even starts,” said Avila, who will see the full squad report Feb. 18th. “This year, the same thing, picking fifth is pretty good and we feel we’re going to get a good pick,” Avila said. “This year, it looks like, it seems like, that there are position players available; guys that can hit,” Avila said.
