Thungela Resources, South Africa’s largest export coal producer, said it won’t make emissions reduction commitments that it can’t keep. This is specifically in relation to so-called "Scope 3" greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – defined as those indirect emissions generated by customers making use of Thungela’s coal. "What we would like to avoid doing is committing to society targets for the sake of committing targets that we will not be able to meet," Thungela CEO July Ndlovu said in response to questions at the group’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday. "And that's why we are being very deliberate and rigorous in terms of our thought process, both in terms of timing and quantum of what we can impact."
