Three U.S. Firefighters Killed in Plane Crash Fighting Australian Wildfires

SYDNEY—Three American firefighters were killed after their air-tanker crashed while battling wildfires ravaging southeastern Australia. A firefighter battles a fire as it consumes a home in New South Wales Jan. 23. The crash “demonstrates the fire season is far from over,” said New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian. In New South Wales, fire authorities said 84 blazes burned and nearly 40 were out of control. In parts of the town of Queanbeyan, near the airport, authorities said that it was too late to leave and that people should take shelter.
