Toronto police and a lawyer have clashing narratives after three people were released from police custody early Sunday morning after being arrested Saturday during a demonstration in which paint was splattered on statues in downtown Toronto. All three are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 30, lawyer Saron Gebresellassi said Sunday morning on Twitter. The arrests drew public scrutiny online, and the protesters moved to Toronto police 52 Division, where the suspects were held until the early hours of Sunday morning. Police tweeted Saturday night that the people arrested “declined to sign the release forms to leave custody. Saunders added that the processes have been recorded and the moment that counsel was identified, access was provided to the protesters.
