Lightning Seeds songwriter Ian Broudie told friends that when the England anthem topped the charts during the 2018 World Cup, he earned just a few thousand pounds. Gomez frontman Tom Gray founded the Broken Record campaign calling for streaming services and record companies to give artists a fair deal. "I was playing at a festival in 2019 with the Lightning Seeds," he told the Mirror. He added: "It’s obvious that if we want young artists to be able to sustain their careers the government should make an intervention.
