Thousands register to vote abroad, but uncertainty surrounds voters in Israel, Sudan, Ukraine

For the upcoming 2024 general elections, 18 469 South Africans living in more than 100 countries abroad have registered to vote. While the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) expects the number to increase after the weekend, uncertainty surrounds how South Africans living in Israel, Sudan and Ukraine will vote after the temporary closure of missions due to "safety concerns". The IEC could not be drawn to comment on whether the closures were linked to conflicts in the different countries and instead referred questions to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco).
