Thousands of Ethiopian-Israelis in Tel Aviv protest against police brutality

Thousands of Israelis of Ethiopian origin protested against police violence in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, after the shooting death of a mentally unstable young man sparked anger and accusations of unfair police treatment among the Ethiopian-Israeli community. Organizers of the protest have encouraged participants to bring cameras to document police conduct during the rally, after a similar protest in 2015 turned violent. “We want to say, ‘Yes to the protest, no to violence’,” Samai Elias, a traditional Jewish-Ethiopian religious leader said, according to Haaretz. “We aren’t against the police; this protest is so the police will be better,” Haaretz quoted protest organizer Rachel Yosef as saying. Israel's Ethiopian community now numbers around 140,000 people, including more than 50,000 born in the Jewish state.
