The Blue Jays’ return at the trade deadline seemed disappointing enough on Aug. 2. The Jays have started making their push for the post-season this month despite the front office’s actions at the deadline, not because of them. Merrifield doesn’t have a clear role this year or next, which seems problematic considering he’s owed $6.5 million (U.S.) beyond this season. The Tampa Bay Rays did less than the Jays at the deadline, yet saw their play improve. Winning the trade deadline doesn't come with any assurances in October, but the more talent a team has, the better its chances of going on a run.
