This might not be the moment for TV to humanize the rich

I’m curious to see what Benedict Cumberbatch’s rabid fans make of his new miniseries, Patrick Melrose (premiering May 12 on Crave). The Cumberbunnies love their man through thick and thin, but the three hours I’ve seen are tough going. Melrose (Cumberbatch) lives among the super-rich English aristocracy, where idleness turns to decadence and then to rot. I get that this is the point: what appears to be glamorous isn’t, having no meaning in life is bad for you, etc. Tolstoy wrote that all unhappy families are unique in their own way, but the Melroses’ unhappiness feels too familiar.
