South of the border, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it will not expect compliance with the routine monitoring and reporting of pollution, nor will it pursue penalties for those breaking these rules. The polarizing politics around climate change haven’t stopped as the federal government manages a pandemic and talk of reopening the economy. We have seen environmental projects and monitoring being suspended due to fear of viral transmission. A new report by Environment and Climate Change Canada warns extreme rainfall and subsequent flash floods will become more frequent and more severe if climate change is not addressed. Important activities may seem to have been placed on the back-burner in the whirlwind that has ensued due to the coronavirus pandemic, including monitoring and protection of our environment.
