Irene Wu has watched as some of her international student peers opt to register for fewer courses, while others drop out completely, due to mounting challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the changes and measures put in place by the federal government with regards to international students don’t seem to go far enough, she said. Nothing is available for us as international students,” Wu said. The federal government recently announced a number of temporary policy changes aimed at supporting international students during the pandemic. She has heard about some institutions, like the University of Guelph actually increasing fees for international students, which she said is the opposite of what should be happening amid the pandemic.
