Bronfman, who has worked on the series since the first season, rose from fabric buyer to costume supervisor and then this year took on the top role of costume designer. Bronfman helped develop those handmaid outfits alongside original costume designer Ane Crabtree, and the garb has taken on life and meaning of its own. “There is a shift in meaning to that red this season,” says Bronfman of the handmaids’ cloaks. “They are showing their status, that they don’t really have to wear veils. Freedom of expression may be kept to a minimum in this season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
