A collaboration of scientists met up at Brookhaven National Laboratory to track lithium ions with a new imagining technique. This work could lead to improvements in the engineering of batteries allowing them to be more powerful and last longer . One of the down sides to lithium batteries is the fact that they degrade over time and lose total capacity even if they’re not used. The scientists analyzed lithium batteries on the nanoscale in real-time to find out more about the inner workings of these batteries. Although one of the benefits of lithium batteries is their ability to charge; the charge-recharge cycle does take its toll on the battery’s performance.
