Things are getting desperate out thereJO MOIR/STUFF Bill English and his son Xavier on the campaign trail in Auckland. It just so happens of course that the pledge came as the first votes are about to be cast, with early voting getting underway Monday. It was tit for tat from Jacinda Ardern, who countered by elevating Labour's pledge to ban foreign speculators from the housing market. Unsurprisingly, mention of Labour's plan to investigate a capital gains tax was less prominent. Older hands in National will remember when Labour tried it against Ardern's equivalent, John Key, on the campaign trail in 2008 and it blew up in its face.
