Two years after Steven's death, John was diagnosed with pernicious anaemia - a sudden failure of his bone marrow to create enough red blood cells. He and Betty, fresh in their bewildered grief, struggled in every conceivable way as a result of Steven's death. "Psychologically, I've always believed I had something to do with Steven's death," he said. Steven's death may be unconnected to radiation, but the cloud that has followed the family since is.
