University of Washington engineers have been working on a small sensing system small enough to ride on a bumblebee which they are calling the living Internet of Things (IoT). This allowed the bees to collect data which could then be compiled to form a complete picture of the farm. The tiny backpacks can store only 30 kilobytes of data and upload data only when the bees return to the hive. The put one bee with a backpack into a glass jar and moved that one bee away from the four antennas. This allowed them to determine the bee's position within about 262 feet (80 meters) of the antennas.
