ASHEBORO — Some months back, the two sand cats at the North Carolna Zoo apparently got together and decided to make a third. This is the first kitten for the pair and a rare sand cat born under human care anywhere in the United States. The total sand cat population in 2019 in AZA zoos was only 33, the zoo said. The NC Zoo also notes that the sand cat is one the world’s smallest feline species, weighing from 4-8 pounds and measuring, on average, 20 inches long. When Easter comes around at the zoo, observant visitors alerted by the sudden perk-up of a sand cat might see a rodent tail sticking out of an Easter egg.
