Every year at this time those who enjoy such things debate whether there’s a “war on Christmas.” Does saying “Merry Christmas” risk giving offence? The truth is there is a war on Christmas, and Christians, going on but it has nothing to do with these rather minor concerns. In far too many countries, Christians face real persecution for practising their religion, and the hostility gets particularly intense as Christmas nears with its public manifestations of religious devotion. Less known is its crackdown on independent Protestant churches, which has intensified in the weeks leading up to Christmas. In Canada and other lucky countries we enjoy the luxury of squabbling over Christmas greetings.
